Birdsong was originally inspired by the beautiful patina on an old dump truck that has long since been abandoned on the side of the road on Ali'i Dr. in Kona, Hawai’i. The image of the truck pays tribute to the fact that when technology is left out in the elements, it will eventually return to the earth. The theme of the painting is a dedication to the joyful abundance found on Hawai’i. Alexander describes his figurative work as a snapshot from a play that he has envisioned, where the subject is modeled after a real person, and the scenario is imagined. The subject of Bird Song, someone who is known around Kona simply as Bruddah Dennis, represents a carefree day in Hawai'i. In the spirit of the laughing buddha, he is enjoying a carefree day in the sun singing to a cardinal while his pig is resting with a belly full of bananas.
