Alexander has returned to Kilauea's power many times over the years, and a double fountain eruption like this one is rare, something witnessed in only a few places on earth.
 
The painting is built with thick, textured impasto, paint applied in raised layers create an effect that makes the lava look almost lit from within. At the peak of the eruption, molten rock fountains into the air, then cools and darkens as it falls back toward the earth. Through the cascade, you can still make out a gentle blue sky and clouds drifting along the horizon. At the base of the volcano you can see vents in the solidified lava where steam gently floats into the air. The river of magma below carries its own movement and dimension, flowing toward the viewer.
 
At 40" x 60", the scale creates an immediate visual impact and gives the composition room to breathe, letting the contrast between the glowing fountain and the darkening lava read clearly from across a room.
